Lloyd Brown - Staff Profile
Head Men's & Women's Tennis Coach
Lloyd Brown enters his second season with Missouri Baptist University, serving as Co-Head Coach for the Men’s and Women’s Tennis programs. Coach Brown retired from Jefferson College Tennis, where he coached for 22 years. He has had the honor of being inducted into the St. Louis Tennis Hall of Fame. He was one of only three 2005-06 Hall of Fame honorees. Of the select few who have been inducted into the St. Louis Tennis Hall of Fame, many are former teachers and students of Coach Brown’s, as well as others he helped coach.
Brown was an excellent junior player who played #1 singles and doubles at NE Missouri State Teacher’s College (Truman State University) and later became a teaching pro, working for legends Earl Buchholz, Sr. and Bill Price, who once tabbed Brown the best teaching pro he knew.
He coached at University City High School, helping Ralph Hart, Jr. to a 1969 Missouri state singles title. As the St. Louis Junior Development Director, his teams won National City Championships in 1967 and 1969, with Jimmy Connors as one of his players.
During his 22 years at Jefferson College, Brown’s teams were 449-97(averaging over 20 wins per season) including 13 All-Americans and nine Academic All-Americans. He received the NJCAA Hershel Stevens Coaching Award in 1996, was elected to the NJCAA Men’s Tennis Hall of Fame in 1998, was presented the Wilson/ITA Coach of the Year Award in 2001, and was named to the Jefferson College Harold Oetting Wall of Fame in 2004. His team’s highest ranking was in 1998, finishing third in the nation.
Aside from the numerous tennis-related honors and awards he’s received, Brown says he and his wife Ruthie are equally proud of their three children and 7 grandchildren. Both sons, Matthew, who is an Associate Professor at the University of South Carolina and was Jefferson College’s 2003 Alumnus of the Year, and Chris, a missionary in Central and Eastern Europe, played for him at Jefferson College. His daughter Andi is employed with a church in Quincy, Il.
