Physical Education Certification

The teacher certification program for Physical Education at Missouri Baptist University is a part of a planned integrated system (pattern) of coursework designed to enable the student to acquire a strong knowledge base and core of subject competencies All students seeking a Physical Education certification are expected to demonstrate their competency in ten areas adopted by the Missouri State Board of Education. Specifically, these ten competency areas include:

  • Command of subject matter
  • Knowledge of pedagogy
  • Understanding of development and learning
  • Curriculum and planning
  • Instructional planning
  • Classroom management
  • Teacher as communicator
  • Teacher as evaluator
  • Teacher as reflective practitioner
  • Learning communities

Students showcase their level of proficiency in each of the ten standards via an electronic portfolio and/or standard portfolio. Typical Work Activities

  • Lead groups of students in classes in games, dance, gymnastics, and fitness activities.
  • Assess physical education needs and place in classes in accordance with their health status and ability.
  • Direct and guide students in a broad range of activities to help them develop skills such as accuracy, agility, balance, coordination, power, rhythm, strength, timing, and other attributes needed in physical activities.
  • Meet with parents, school counselors, and school staff, to keep the community informed about the physical education and sports programs.
  • Teach a sports skills
  • Instruct students in the use of equipment.
  • Prepare a budget for materials and equipment.
  • May teach other subjects in the classroom.
  • May coach a sport
  • May give first aid and/or CPR.
