MBU theatre set to launch productions this weekend
This Thursday, MBU Theatre will open the season with the ambitious production, “The Drowning Girls.”
The first show, which will be directed, produced and consists of an all-female cast, tells a story of domestic abuse. The Drowning Girls shares the realities of abuse through true events dated to the early 1900s. MBU Theatre Director Kasey Cox hopes the production proves challenging to the audience.
“This production is a very important topic that we don’t touch on enough,” Cox said. “How do we approach domestic violence as Christians and give our brothers and sisters counsel?”
The MBU Theatre Department will perform five productions this school year, including:
The Drowning Girls, September 2-5, 2021
The eerie production shares a perspective that sheds light on stories of domestic abuse. This show is based on true events that occurred in the early 1900s.
Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, October 28-31, 2021
Seven Brides for Seven Brothers is a unique love story that centered around taming a group of mountain men.
Eurydice, November 18-21, 2021
This contemporary play reimagines a classic myth through the eyes of a heroine.
Junie B Jones: The Musical, February 10-13, 2022
This production is based off the popular scholastic books, Junie B Jones. MBU Theatre will partner with The Scholastic Book Fair to encourage audience members to buy books for an underprivileged school in the area.
Fools, March 24-27, 2022
This comic fable shares a story of a small town under a seemingly unbreakable curse.
Dancing in the Light, April 9-10, 2022
Featuring our own students, this dance showcase provides an artistic display of the light at MBU.
“This season, as with every season, we want to challenge the student body to watch all our productions empathetically as well as critically,” Cox said. “We want them to ask themselves how these shows challenge them in their faith or the living out of their faith and, hopefully, be compelled to act in some way.”
MBU offers undergraduate majors in theatre, speech theatre and music.
All MBU productions for the 2021-2022 academic year are currently scheduled to be held in-person. In light of Covid-19, MBU is offering additional balcony seating with social distancing protocols for high-risk audience members.
